WATER & CARE GUIDE
Watering & Care Instructions for New Plants, Sod, and Seed
At Creative Scapes, we want your new landscape to thrive. All newly installed plants, sod, and seeded areas are thoroughly watered at the time of installation. From there, proper watering and care are essential for successful establishment.
Because weather in Cincinnati can change quickly, always use these guidelines along with actual soil conditions, temperature, rainfall, and sun exposure.
Newly Installed Plants
Initial Watering:
All plants are watered by our team at the time of installation assuming there is access to water.
Spring Watering
-
Check soil moisture about 7 days after installation
-
Pull back mulch near the base of the plant
-
If the soil is dry, apply a slow, deep watering directly to the root zone
-
Avoid watering the foliage
Summer & Early Fall Watering
-
Check soil moisture every 3–5 days
-
If dry, apply a deep, thorough watering
-
Avoid quick, shallow daily watering
-
Deep watering promotes stronger root growth
Plant Care Tips
-
Smaller plants require less water than larger shrubs and trees
-
Keep soil consistently moist, but not saturated
-
Do not allow plants to completely dry out
-
Mulch helps retain moisture and regulate temperature
-
Keep mulch slightly away from stems and trunks

Newly Installed Sod

New sod requires consistent moisture immediately to establish roots into the soil below.
First 2 Weeks
-
Water thoroughly right after installation
-
Keep sod and underlying soil consistently moist
-
Typically requires daily watering, sometimes more in hot, dry, or windy conditions
-
Do not allow sod to dry out
Weeks 3–4
-
Begin reducing watering frequency
-
Transition to deeper, less frequent watering
-
Monitor for dry spots, lifting edges, or stress areas
Sod Care Tips
-
Limit foot traffic until sod is fully rooted
-
Mow only after sod is established and reaches proper height
-
Extra attention may be needed during summer heat
Newly Seeded Areas
Seeding requires a different watering approach than sod or established turf.
During Germination
-
Keep the top layer of soil consistently moist
-
Use light, frequent watering
-
Avoid heavy watering that causes runoff or seed washout
After Germination
-
Gradually reduce watering frequency
-
Transition to deeper watering to encourage root growth
-
Continue protecting the area until established
Seed Care Tips
-
Avoid foot traffic
-
Do not let the soil surface dry out during germination
-
Establishment timing will vary based on weather

Keep Weather in Mind
Cincinnati weather can change quickly. Sun exposure, shade, wind, slope, soil type, and rainfall all impact watering needs. Areas in full sun or exposed to wind will dry out faster than shaded areas.
When in doubt, check the soil before watering.
